Alejandro López Peceño
Welcome! I am a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow at the European University Institute, where I arrived in September 2024 after receiving my PhD from New York University.
My work applies tools from causal inference to study a range of issues in political economy and comparative politics. I am particularly interested in understanding the emergence of mass politics in developing states and societies, including phenomena such as contentious politics, the formation of political attitudes, or the rise of national identities. My dissertation studies how the expansion of education and voting rights shaped some of these processes in the canonical case of 19th-century France. In a second line of research, I investigate the behavior of civilian populations during armed conflicts.
Prior to my time at NYU, I earned an MA in Social Sciences from the Carlos III-Juan March Institute and a BA in Economics from Carlos III University of Madrid.
